As coaches, we get excited to start every season. And although we plan the season out on how to make it successful for everyone, we never try to plan more than one meet ahead. And never try to plan for the next season.
There is a quote from one of my favorite movies, Bull Durham, that goes like this: “I just wanna give it my best shot, and good Lord willing, things will work out. You know, you got to play ’em one day at a time.”
When Coach Mollie was still working the clock and not on deck, I told her that we had something special in the water this year. On paper, this was the most talent that we had in the North Aquatic Center at one time. We just needed to stay focused.
We broke three records at Sectionals and almost two more, we had a Sectional Champion, we had 6 individual swims advance (2 more close in swimming and one close in diving), and we had our first swimmer in 15 plus years to qualify for 2 events for 4 straight years.
To put in perspective, the cut times for the WIAA Division I State Meet in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 IM, 50 Free, 500 Free, the 200 Free Relay, 100 Back, and the 400 Free Relay are all the fastest of all time to qualify.
To break that down even more, at the pace we are going in the state of Wisconsin, you may need to break the school record in the 500 to qualify for the State meet. Luckily we have someone on our team to do that. 🙂
Let move away from that meet and move to the entire team. Taking three simple events: 100 Free, 200IM, and 500 Free.
In 2010 we had 20 kids under 1:16 in the 100 Free, in 2011 we had 20, and this year 24.
In 2010 we had 9 kids under 2:50 in the 200 IM, in 2011 we had 8, and this year 12.
In 2010 we had 3 kids under 6:15 in the 500, in 2011 we had 4, and this year 6.
Some of this is due the numbers of the team including the 13 freshman, but more importantly it was about the effort. The progress we made as a whole was tremendous. And although I am not looking past Saturday, the foundation for the 29 returners (and I know you are all returning) is set!
And as we approach the last meet of the season, it represents a culmination of the season for the 2012 team and one of my favorite seasons in a long time.
